GitGrit vs Baz
Last updated 2026-10-29.
The short answer: Baz is an AI code reviewer. Its agents read each pull request and leave review comments. GitGrit checks every repository against your engineering standards as code, on every push, and shows where each one stands. Baz helps the reviewer. GitGrit tells you whether your standards are met, everywhere.
Who each one fits
Baz fits you if you want an AI reviewer on every pull request that catches issues and suggests fixes while code is being reviewed.
GitGrit fits you if you want to know where every repository stands against your standards, including the repositories nobody is changing right now, with results you can track over time.
Many teams will want both.
At a glance
| Baz | GitGrit | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | AI code reviewer | Engineering standards platform |
| What it looks at | The changes in a pull request | The whole repository, on every push, pull request and tag |
| How a rule is defined | A prompt for a custom review agent, or guidelines from files like AGENTS.md | Short, readable code, or an LLM check when a rule needs judgment |
| Who decides | An LLM | The code, for most standards; an LLM only where you choose |
| Output | Review comments on the pull request | Pass or fail per standard, and a grade from A+ to F per repository |
| View across repositories | Per repository | One screen with every repository's grade, over time |
| Open source | No | Yes (MIT), self-hostable |
How they work
Baz
Baz connects to your Git provider and reviews pull requests with AI agents. You can add custom review agents by writing a prompt, or let Baz generate them from recurring feedback in your past pull requests and from instruction files such as AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md. Findings appear as comments on the pull request.
GitGrit
In GitGrit, each standard is a short, readable piece of code that checks the repository directly. Standards run in an isolated sandbox on every push, pull request and tag. Every repository gets a grade from A+ to F, with the exact reason when something fails. Your AI coding agents can read the same standards through the GitGrit CLI and API, so they follow them while they write.
Using them together
They answer different questions. Baz asks "is this pull request good?" and helps the reviewer in the moment. GitGrit asks "does every repository meet our standards?" and keeps the answer visible over time. AI reviewers suggest. GitGrit verifies.
FAQ
Isn't an AI reviewer enough?
An AI reviewer sees one pull request at a time, and its comments can be dismissed. It doesn't tell you where every repository stands, or catch drift in repositories nobody is changing.
Can GitGrit read my AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md?
GitGrit has ready-made standards that check your agent instruction files exist, stay up to date and stay a reasonable size. Your agents can also read your GitGrit standards through the CLI and API.
Does GitGrit comment on pull requests?
GitGrit checks every pull request and shows the result per commit and per branch in GitGrit. It doesn't write line-by-line review comments; that's what a code reviewer like Baz is for.
